Frederic Puzin’s Ker 46 Daguet 3 – Corum took line honours in the Yachting Malta Coastal Race, the traditional prelude to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which saw 42 teams from 17 countries take to the water on Wednesday 20th October.
RMYC Principal Race Officer Peter Dimech sent the fleet on a course of around 30 nautical miles. From Marsamxett Harbour the yachts rounded the Valletta Harbour Fairway Buoy, hoisted spinnakers past the Sliema seafront and St Paul’s Island, rounded Comino to port and took a tight reach back to the finish.
Daguet 3 – Corum finished only a few minutes ahead of Francois Bopp’s Swiss Farr 52 Chocolate 3, with Peter Gustafsson’s Swedish J/111 Blur third across the line. Christoph, Aaron and Maya Podesta’s First 45 Elusive 2, winner of the last two Rolex Middle Sea Races, was fourth to finish and the first Maltese boat. Six Maltese boats raced in all, including Ton Ton Laferla, Xpresso, Calypso and the Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation’s JYS Jan and JYS Jarhead.
Yachting Malta has supported the Coastal Race for three years and has confirmed the partnership for three more. The 42nd Rolex Middle Sea Race starts from Grand Harbour on Saturday 23rd October.
