With more than a week still to go before the start, 25 boats have already entered the BOV Gozo Weekend, the Royal Malta Yacht Club’s autumn favourite, which returns this November with the continued support of Bank of Valletta. The fleet is split across three classes: IRC Racer, IRC Cruiser and RMYC Club Class.
Mixing competitive racing with a destination format and a friendly social programme, the event appeals to racers and cruisers alike. For many crews it is a chance to get back on the water together after the Rolex Middle Sea Race; for others it will be their first outing with the fleet this season.
Calypso the boat to beat
In IRC Racer, all eyes will again be on Calypso 3.0. Seb Ripard’s crew took overall honours last year and return in search of a third consecutive title, though a strong list of confirmed entries means they can expect to be pushed all weekend.
RMYC Club Class welcomes several new names alongside a number of familiar faces. Among them is RMYC Committee Member Aaron Gatt Floridia, back in the class with his own yacht, Otra Vez. Last year he sailed on Nenya and won the class, and he will be hoping to carry that form into this year’s event.
Ashore in Gozo
As ever, the weekend is as much about time ashore as on the water, and families and friends of the crews are made very welcome. After Saturday’s racing, participants meet on the pontoons for a happy hour with pastizzi and beer. The traditional fenkata is also on the programme and is open to everyone, including those in Gozo for the weekend who are not racing.
Sunday brings the passage race back to Malta, followed by the prize giving.
