Baptiste Garnier’s Eugenia V, a regular in the race, won the Classic category of the 2023 Trophée Bailli de Suffren, the classic yacht race that for 22 years has made July synonymous with elegance, history and camaraderie on the water.
Known as the Gentleman’s Race and the only international classic boat race in the world, it follows in the footsteps of Pierre André de Suffren, Bailli and Grand Cross of the Order of St John, from Saint-Tropez via Bonifacio and Trapani to its finish in Birgu.
Lys, skippered by Philippe Monnet and Patrick Boccard, was second in the Classic category and Olivier Lamit’s Hermitage third. Philippe Descorps’ Flora won the Spirit of Tradition class ahead of Yvon Fauconnier’s Albatros and Alain Monnier’s Ecbatane, and Gerard Marchetti’s Rebel won the Multihull category.
The prize-giving, co-hosted by Yachting Malta and Von der Heyden Yachting and coordinated by the Marenostrum Racing Club of Saint-Tropez, took place at the Cugo Gran Macina, the Sheer Bastion built into seventeenth-century fortifications from the time of the Knights.
