Dillon Cassar won the 5km and Aaron Mifsud the 10km as around 300 athletes opened the 2023 Intersport 10k Series in the Three Cities, with the 5km proving as popular as the 10km.
The sold-out race started in Birgu and followed the seafront into Cospicua and Senglea. Wet and slippery patches made many athletes cautious, especially those hoping to make Team Malta for the Games of the Small States of Europe, but the finishes were thrilling.
Cassar led the 5km from start to finish in 15:35, while Kurt Dalli pipped Mark Herrera to second in a sprint separated by milliseconds. Making his debut on the course, Mifsud led the 10km from the start to win in 32:57, and Mark Bezzina edged Ian Camilleri for second at the line. Josann Attard Pulis won the women’s 10km in 38:59, sixth overall, ahead of Vanessa Camilleri and Christiana Borg. Joelle Cortis won the women’s 5km from Marija Cumbo and Rosalie Borg Cauchi.
Race Director Charlie Demanuele presented the trophies, and the organisers thanked the Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa local councils, Transport Malta, the District Police and Intersport. The series continues in Maqluba on 23rd April.
