Greece’s Aristos Chatzistamatiou (ILCA 7) and Britain’s Niall Peelo (ILCA 6) won the Yachting Malta EurILCA Masters Series event hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, after a final day that made up for two days of disappointing weather.
The first day’s racing was postponed, and only two races were possible on the second, when an early start caught light winds and flat water before the breeze died. On Saturday evening the ILCA 7 was led by Austria’s Cristoph Marsano, ahead of Germany’s Wolfgang Gerz and Chatzistamatiou, and the ILCA 6 by Britain’s Rob Cage, ahead of Moldova’s Vadim Yakhinson and Max Hunt.
Sunday started late in around four knots, but the breeze built to a steady seven to eight knots and four races were sailed off the Sliema seafront, with positions changing throughout. Peelo, fourth overnight, won two races to overtake Cage by a single point in an all-British ILCA 6 podium completed by Max Hunt. In ILCA 7, Chatzistamatiou climbed from third to win with ten points, with Marsano and Gerz each slipping a place to second and third.
