Steering the Course, the World Sailing initiative backed by the International Olympic Committee to advance gender equity in sailing, returns to the Royal Malta Yacht Club for its fourth local edition, hosted together with Vikings Sailing Club as part of the Yachting Malta Race Week programme.
The event has sold out every year since it was first held in Malta, and 2026 is no different: a waiting list is now open for anyone still hoping to take part. Steering the Course is supported by Yachting Malta, Camilleri Marine and Boost.
The programme runs over three afternoon sessions from 15th September: two training sessions, followed by a final session of racing in Marsamxett Harbour. Crews will sail the Club’s RS Quests, which suit first-time and mixed-ability sailors, with an instructor and three sailors on each boat. Every crew will train on land before being launched at sea.
This year’s theme comes from the 2026 International Women’s Day: Give to Gain, a reminder that when support, mentorship and opportunities are offered, everyone stands to gain. That means opening pathways for more women and girls to discover their potential, build their skills and step into roles as athletes, coaches, race officials and leaders. Locally the message carries extra weight, as the entire organising committee is made up of women, covering logistics, marketing, media, coaching and administration.
Alongside the sailing, the two clubs will host a talk by Francesca Vincenti, twice Sportswoman of the Year and a Maltese Olympic Committee Hall of Fame inductee. In Against the Wind: Breaking Barriers and Never Letting Go she will share the highlights of her career, including a bronze medal at the 1983 World Championship in Bermuda, much of it achieved without the backing of a national team. Attendance is free, but places are limited and registration is required.
