Forty-three young Maltese athletes competed at the COJI Jeux des Îles in Mallorca, winning medals in athletics, swimming, gymnastics, table tennis and sailing. Malta has taken part in these Games for islanders aged 9 to 17 since 2004.
Swimming led the medal haul, with golds for Julienne Woods, Sophia Allen, Matthew Satariano and Caine Schembri on his first international outing. The boys finished second overall in swimming and the girls third. In athletics Kareem Chouhal won gold in the discus, silver in the shot put and bronze in the hammer.
Philippa Busuttil won four gymnastics medals, including gold on beam and in the all-around, and the team took silver. Luke Bonello and Luke Fenech went unbeaten to win the table tennis gold, and the sailors won silver in the team event.
“These Games are the perfect opportunity for the next generation of athletes vying to represent Malta internationally,” said Chef de Mission Nigel McCarthy. Ella Fenech Attard and Matthew Camilleri carried the flag at the Opening Ceremony.
