Five athletes represented Malta at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad in Paris, competing across athletics, judo, shooting and swimming. Trap shooter Gianluca Chetcuti and swimmer Sasha Gatt carried the Maltese flag at the Opening Ceremony on the Seine.
Sasha Gatt swam the women’s 1500m freestyle, clocking 17:00.54 in the heats. Kyle Micallef raced the men’s 50m freestyle, finishing in 22.89.
On the track, sprinter Beppe Grillo ran 10.69 in the men’s 100m preliminary round. In judo, Katryna Esposito lost her opening bout in the women’s –48kg. At Châteauroux, Gianluca Chetcuti scored 116 in the men’s trap qualification.
None of the Maltese athletes progressed beyond their opening rounds. But for a country of Malta’s size, qualifying for and competing at an Olympic Games is an achievement in itself, and each athlete brought home experience that will feed into the road to Los Angeles 2028.
