Thomas Woods sets two new Age Group Records
Malta’s contingent at the European Junior Championships in Rome yielded one of the best results Malta has chronicled in recent years.
Thomas Woods established two new Age Group Records in the 200m freestyle and 800m freestyle events. In the 200m free he clocked a time of 1:57.92 whilst in the 800m free his time was of 8:45.99.

History was written for Malta when Sasha Gatt not only broke her own 1500m record by 3 seconds in the qualifying heats but also made it to the final of the same distance in the seventh position. Her performance in the final saw her improve the record, by nearly another 13 seconds on the time she had established the previous day. The new 1500m National Record now stands at 16:38.75.
Gatt’s split times meant that she also established a National Record in the 800m freestyle as well as Age Group D records in both 800 m & 1500m distances.
Following her participation at the European Junior Championships, Gatt will be focusing on her participation at the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020, where she will be the youngest athlete of the contingent. Gatt will be competing in the freestyle events – she will start with the 400m heats on Sunday 25th July and the 1500m heats on Monday 26th July.
