Luca Vella and Sarah Demicoli once again emerged winners of their respective categories in the third race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships. The two-kilometre race was once again held in Salina amidst strict Covid-19 protocols.
Vella and Demicoli practically swam in unison for the major part of the race, with Vella creating a slight gap between himself and Demicoli in the last few metres of the race. Vella finished the race in 26 minutes 8 seconds whilst Demicoli finished eleven seconds behind him. This was Demicoli’s fastest race this year.
In the males’ category, two newcomers took the second and third placed honours. Caine Schembri and Alistair Cook finished the race in 26 minutes 59 seconds and 28 minutes 37 seconds respectively.
In the females’ category, Maya Schembri Rodgers continued her consistent performance taking second place yet again. Schembri Rodgers’ time of 27 minutes 40 seconds was the best time so far this season. In third place was Nirvana Micallef who finished in 28 minutes 16 seconds.
The fourth, 2-kilometre race of the Garmin BSJ Open Water Swimming Championships will take place on Wednesday 21st July at 1800hrs.
