Aaron Mifsud and Josann Attard Pulis won the Intersport 10k Series Valletta Edition, as the race made a welcome return to the road running calendar after a three-year break forced by the pandemic.
With the capital’s historic skyline on one side and the harbours on the other, the Valletta course is one of the most scenic of the series. It is also known for the steep inclines that have become the trademark of this race. That did not deter some of Malta’s top runners, veteran athletes and a good number of new faces from taking it on.
Mifsud took charge from the start and led the way throughout, with Mark Herrera and Jonathan Balzan giving chase. The trio kept a steady gap between them all the way to the finish line, taking the three podium places in that order.
In the female category, Josann Attard Pulis also took an early lead and finished ahead of Rosalie Borg Cauchi, with Charyl Fava in third place.
The 5km race saw Charlton Debono take a strong lead to finish first, ahead of Luke Cauchi and David Tabone. Jeanette Muscat won the female race, followed by Lorna Mifsud and Maureen Farrugia.
“It was good to see this race make a return. The Intersport 10k Series tries to find a balance between scenic yet challenging routes. This race is known for its hills, while others, such as the Three Cities race which is next on our calendar, are flat,” remarked Charlie Demanuele, Race Director.
The organisers thanked the Floriana and Valletta Local Councils, Transport Malta, the Malta Police Force, Malta Bike Marshalls, Alpha Medical and all the marshals who assisted on race day.
The 2023 Intersport 10k Series kicks off on Sunday 22nd January with the Three Cities race.
