Around 150 sailors from Europe and Canada are expected in Mellieħa Bay for the Euromed International Regatta, hosted by the Malta Young Sailors Club, as Yachting Malta renews the support it has given the event since 2016, alongside main sponsor Mapfre Insurance.
Last year’s edition went ahead without international entries because of the pandemic. This year strong teams from the Netherlands and Spain are expected, including Spanish sailors Tim Lubat, ranked fourth, and Juan Bennassar, part of the team that won the European Team Racing Championship.
The Optimist fleet is set to be the largest, with Timmy Vassallo, Jonas Micallef and Emily Fenech among the Maltese sailors to watch. In the ILCA 4, a close battle is expected between Shaun Aquilina, Ben Vassallo and Matthew Cachia Debono, while Mia Busuttil (ILCA 4) and Lacey Aquilina, Matthew Flores and Dimitris Vertsonis (ILCA 6) are names to follow.
“International regattas hosted locally not only place Malta on the international sailing circuit but also provide excellent competitive opportunities for local sailors,” said John Huber, Chairman of Yachting Malta. Racing starts on Saturday 18th December at 11:30 and runs until Tuesday 21st December.
