Katrina Micallef finished eighth in the women’s fleet at the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, as Maltese sailors recorded their best results to date at the event.
The championship brought together 429 young sailors from 45 nations, one of the biggest benchmarks of the U19 season. Only the second time Malta has been represented, the Royal Malta Yacht Club sent Katrina Micallef, Jonas Micallef and Kaine Muscat.
Strong, shifty westerlies of 8 to 25 knots and a cold front that kept temperatures below 17°C made for a stark contrast with the Mediterranean summer, and demanded constant adaptation in technique and tactics, especially in the gusty Final Series.
Micallef finished eighth of 122 in the women’s fleet, earning a World Top 10 place and a special plaque presented by Danish sailing legend and three-time Olympic medallist Anne-Marie Rindom. Jonas Micallef finished an impressive 27th of 307 in the men’s championship, one of the largest youth fleets of the season, while Kaine Muscat was 19th in the U17 category in the Silver Fleet, following his twelfth place in the U17 at the European Championship earlier in the summer.
The RMYC Sailing School thanked the Maltese Olympic Committee, SportMalta, the Malta Sailing Federation, the Royal Malta Yacht Club and Firetech for their support of the Club’s athletes.
