Malta is drafting a national policy for yachting and superyachts, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Hon. Aaron Farrugia announced at the first Malta Superyacht Industry Symposium.
The symposium grew from an informal conversation at the Monaco Yacht Show between The Malta Chamber and Yachting Malta’s General Manager, followed by a meeting at Yachting Malta’s offices. The Malta Chamber took the idea up enthusiastically, and with the Malta Maritime Law Association a top-level event took shape, backed mainly by Yachting Malta and Transport Malta and supported by a substantial number of local businesses.
Leading local entrepreneurs and international speakers worked on a superyacht strategy for the industry. Alongside the new policy, the Minister announced a Grand Harbour regeneration plan, helped by the new shore power infrastructure and cleaner air, and a plan for intelligent land reclamation. Opposition spokesperson Hon. Ivan Castillo congratulated the organisers.
The level of participation and discussion made clear how much the industry needed such a platform, and the call now is for it to become an annual event.
