Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Rudolph Agius finished third in his age-group in the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon which took place in the Sultanate of Oman last Saturday.
Agius completed the gruelling race in 4 hours, 28 minutes and 23 seconds to grab third place, out of 118 triathletes, in his age-group and fifteenth place overall out of a field of 577 participants.
The Saints’ triathlete finished the 1.9-kilometre swim past the port city in a time of 30 minutes and eight seconds placing himself in the top three of his age-group at the beginning of the 90.1-kilometre cycle. Agius finished the bike segment in two hours, 27 minutes and 54 seconds averaging 35.94 kilometres per hour. Despite losing his third placing in this segment Agius saved his energies and showed his prowess in the final half-marathon, which he ran in one hour, 25 minutes and 34 seconds, ensuring a third plae in his age group.
This result earned the Birkirkara triathlete a coveted slot in the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championships which will take place in Nice, France on the 30th of June this year.
