Although good racing conditions were not forecasted for the annual RMYC Ragusa Weekend Regatta leaving crews a bit apprehensive, the morning of the Race Up saw crews enjoy an unexpected good south easterly wind which at times averaged up to 14 knots. These conditions enabled the first boats reach Marina di Ragusa under spinnaker at around 4pm. As the winds died down, it was a later arrival for some of the boats, with the last boat reaching the Marina at approximately 8pm.
Throughout the weekend, the Circoli Velici Iblei, under the auspices of the Federazione Italiana Vela, organised the 5th Trofeo Achille Boroli Challenge and the 3rd Hyblea Cup which consisted of a number of round the cans races outside Ragusa Marina. The races were open to Maltese and Sicilian crews. A total of fifteen boats took part, three of which were Maltese.
The Ragusa weekend proved to be very much a Maltese affair with Maya Podesta’s Elusive 2 BOV storming to victory and winning the Achille Boroli Challenge. Third placed on the Challenge’s podium was Godwin Zammit’s Inspiration. The Hyblea Cup was won by Anton Calleja’s Lartista.
Crews started the Race down to Malta early on Monday morning, however lack of wind compelled the boats to retire. This ending to an active weekend however did not dampen the good spirits with which the crews left Ragusa after a great weekend of socialising and sailing.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club thanks volunteers, the Circolo Velici Iblei and the Porto Turistico di Marina di Ragusa for their contribution towards the organisation of this Regatta. A Prize Giving evening will be held on Friday 8th July at 20:00hrs at the Royal Malta Yacht Club.
The next event on the Royal Malta Yacht Club’s race calendar is the hugely popular Malta – Syracuse Regatta which will take place on the 16th July.
