Timmy Vassallo, Emily Fenech and Dimitris Vertsonis were among the class winners at the first Yachting Malta BSC Regatta, a new annual event hosted by Birzebbuga Sailing Club Freeport to give local sailors international racing at home.
Sailors from all of Malta’s major clubs and eight countries raced in the Optimist, Laser and RS Feva classes. Predominantly strong winds allowed seven races over three days. Saturday’s racing took place off Delimara on a course designed for tight racing. On Sunday and Monday, strong winds and heavy swell outside the harbour moved the racing into Marsaxlokk Bay.
“Yachting Malta is keen to support such initiatives, which are steps in the right direction to start hosting international events in local waters,” explained John Huber, Chairman of Yachting Malta. “Following the success of this event, we will look forward to supporting the next edition of this Regatta.” Yachting Malta congratulated the club on a successful event, run under the extra safety protocols the pandemic demanded.
