First ever Ladies Only 10k Race attracts interesting mix of athletes

The first ever Ladies Only 10k road race took place on Sunday 31^st January, when over two hundred twenty female athletes took part in the Urban Jungle House of Sport 10k Road Race.

The Ladies’ Edition was the first ever ‘ladies only’ race in Malta and the idea behind this innovative idea was to attract new faces to the running fold. Participants, which included a mix of runners and walkers, set off in perfect weather conditions on a 10k route that saw them start from Tigne Point and heading towards St. Julian’s and finishing back at Tigne Point. The route, most of which was along the Sliema seafront, was dotted with some steep hills making it quite a challenging route.

“The main intention behind this race is to get more women involved in racing. We hear of women who wish to race but feel daunted by the highly competitive racing scene in Malta which sees mostly seasoned male and female athletes racing together. We felt this race would be a great opportunity for them to get in a racing environment, which is still challenging from a route perspective but slightly less so in terms of competitors.”, said Charlie Demanuele, Race Organiser and Director. “We were very pleased to see a large number of athletes from Mellieha Athletics Club who came in full force – from their more seasoned runners to beginners – all of whom crossed the finish line with a huge smile on their face. Naturally this would not have been possible with out the commitment and help of Urban Jungle House of Sport who supported this event wholeheartedly”

First to cross the finish line was Starmax athlete Josann Attard Pulis who finished the hilly route in a time of 39 minutes, 52 seconds. Second placed, crossing the line 4 mins 30 seconds later was new comer Nathalie Briffa Vassallo and followed very closely in third place by Mellieha AC athlete Joanna Camilleri. Trophies were presented to the top three athletes as well as the first three athletes in each of the Age Categories.
