Dillon Cassar broke his own course record at the sold-out Intersport 10k Burmarrad Road Race on Sunday morning, crossing the line in 30 minutes 22 seconds. That is 51 seconds faster than the record he set on the same course a year earlier.
Cassar kept a comfortable lead ahead of a strong group of podium contenders that included Christopher Micallef, Aaron Mifsud, Mark Herrera, Tommy Wallbank and Matthew Xuereb. After the first lap Micallef and Mifsud led the chase, with Wallbank and Herrera close behind. Herrera, who had been plagued by injuries in recent years, then made a strong push that took him past Micallef to finish second by five seconds.
In the females’ category, Joelle Cortis gave a good account of herself to take the win ahead of seasoned athlete Josann Attard Pulis, with Marija Cumbo in third place.
Gabriel Farrugia won the one-lap 5km course in 15:23, ahead of Heathcliff Vella and Keith Schembri. Familiar faces made up the female podium. Charyl Fava, whose performances have been improving throughout the series, finished first, ahead of Rosalie Borg Cauchi and Hayley Acreman.
“This race is known for being one of the fastest in Malta, so it attracts many athletes. Being sold out weeks ahead is proof of this. Having a course record beaten, as Dillon Cassar did once again, always leaves a feel-good factor amongst the running community,” remarked Charlie Demanuele, Race Director. He thanked Intersport, who have supported the series since it started in 2015.
The final race of the 2023 Intersport 10k Series takes place in Valletta on 8th December.
